Vanpool Questions

What is a Vanpool?
Simply put, a vanpool is like a large carpool with groups of 11 to 14 commuters who share similar commute trips and work schedules. ACHD Commuteride provides 15 passenger vans to groups who are interested in starting a vanpool.

Who Drives the Vanpool?
Van drivers are members of the vanpool. Because there are some duties associated with being the driver, they may not have to pay the monthly fare. Individuals who wish to drive must go through an application and training process prior to getting behind the wheel of a Commuteride Van. Most vanpools have more than one driver. You can review our downloadable vanpool documents which include driver and rider applications and policy information.

Who Rides in Vanpools?
People who are looking to share the ride like co-workers, friends, neighbors and/or family members may be potential vanpoolers. Living and working near each other works best for setting up vanpools and members frequently meet in one or two common locations like a Park and Ride to get on the van at the beginning of the day’s trip.

How Much does it Cost?
The riders share the cost of the vehicle and its operation by paying an equitable monthly fare. Commuteride oversees all maintenance, insurance and provides you with a fuel card to pay for gasoline. To figure out the cost of your current commute check out our commute calculator. Commuteride also offers a variety of commute incentives that may further help you reduce the cost of your commute.

Why Vanpool?
Vanpooling can help with the following:

  • Reduce cost associated with driving alone like gas, maintenance, wear & tear, insurance and depreciation.
  • Reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality
  • Reduce stress associated with driving to work everyday.
  • Qualify for several Guaranteed Ride Home programs in case of an emergency.
  • Your may get some extra sleep or have time to read.
  • Quarterly rebates of up to $30.00 possible when monthly vanpool fare is paid on time
  • Monthly vanpool payments can be made on line

What about Emergencies?
Once you’ve joined a vanpool you will be able to take advantage of Commuteride’s Guaranteed Ride Home and Guaranteed Ride Home+. Two programs that are designed to get you home in case of an emergency. You must pre-register for these programs to qualify. What about Rules and Guidelines? Good communication is critical to a successful vanpool experience. Be sure to discuss any concerns about food, beverages, perfume/colognes, radio stations prior to joining the van to avoid misunderstandings. All Commuteride vans are non-smoking and seat belts are mandatory.

How do I join?
To find out if there’s already a van on the road that matches your commute check out our current Vanpools "On the Road". If you don’t see a vanpool serving your area but you would like to start one give our helpful vanpool staff a call to find out more.
